Chelsea to enter race for Erling Haaland amid Romelu Lukaku controversy

Chelsea to consider Erling Haaland

Premier League giants Chelsea could unexpectedly set themselves to make a late push with growing interest in Borussia Dortmund starlet Erling Haaland.

According to a report by Football.London’s Jake Stokes, Chelsea are ‘back in the mix’ for the Norwegian goal machine after the recent tension between Blues frontman Romelu Lukaku and boss Thomas Tuchel.

That uncertainty in the wake of Lukaku’s interview comments may give Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia an avenue to approach Dortmund for Haaland, who could pounce for the former RB Salzburg standout according to SportBILD.

Football.London postulated that Lukaku’s future may not necessarily be tied to a move for Haaland either.

Chelsea certainly has the financial means to acquire the Norwegian with a view of integrating both he and Lukaku as a striker tandem at Stamford Bridge. Should they combine well on the pitch, it would surely pay dividends for Thomas Tuchel, but if they failed to mesh or if Lukaku does seek a move away from the club, then Chelsea already has his replacement on their books.

Dortmund to convince Norwegian to remain in Germany

Despite the near-constant links with Erling Haaland departing the Ruhr valley, Borussia Dortmund director and former club academy graduate and star Sebastian Kehl is convinced that the German giants remain a viable option.

“The situation is very clear, he has the opportunity to leave,” Kehl said. “But there are also a few reasons why Erling is in very, very good hands at Borussia Dortmund as well and why we as a club remain a very good option for him.

We will sit down with Erling and his team in the coming weeks and discuss the situation in depth. Of course it would be good if the decision does not drag on forever.”

But Kehl made the club’s position clear; they will not be held to ransom by a delayed decision from Haaland’s camp regarding his future.

Replacing a player of Erling Haaland’s quality and potential is no easy task, especially when Dortmund are no longer in a position to get maximum value for the player given a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for ~£70million rather than a figure that surely would have equaled or eclipsed the £100million mark this previous summer.

What remains near certain is that with interest from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, Haaland will likely be plying his trade elsewhere next season.
