Why Edinson Cavani was left out of Manchester United’s squad for Young Boys clash

Manchester United name squad for Young Boys game

Manchester United kick off their 2021/22 Champions League campaign with a trip to Switzerland to take on BSC Young Boys on Tuesday evening. The Swiss side are the weakest side in group F, which pits the Red Devils against Villareal, the side who beat them in the Europa League final on penalties last season, as well as Italian outfit Atalanta.

A win in Switzerland, therefore, is both expected and needed in order to get their Champions League run started, and as such a strong squad has been named as travelling.

This squad includes new signings Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with youth prospects Anthony Elanga and goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

One major absentee however, is Edinson Cavani, who netted 17 times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last campaign.

Why Cavani misses out

Speaking after the victory over Newcastle, Ole revealed the reason behind Cavani’s absence, saying:

“Edinson got a knock in training. Maybe he’ll be [out for] a week or so, he’s still working his way up to full fitness from that one.”

This, of course, clears the way for the man who inherited his no.7 shirt to also inherit his starting berth against Young Boys, with Ronaldo fresh off the back of a brace on his return to Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial could also be chosen to lead the line, but unless there are fitness concerns, it seems as though Ronaldo will want to return to the biggest stage in world football, and try and make his Champions League mark back with Manchester United.
