Tottenham dealt potential blow as Heung-Min Son ruled out of international duty

Heung-Min Son out of Korea’s tie with Lebanon

After drawing the opening fixture of their World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign with Iraq, South Korea play host to Lebanon today, and will be desperate for three points to get their campaign back on track.

However, Paulo Bento’s side will have to do without star player Heung-Min Son, who is set to miss out due to injury. The KFA today announced that the Tottenham forward “experienced discomfort in his right leg after Monday’s practice”, which left him a doubt for the game.

However, it was later diagnosed as a strained calf, and although the KFA say his absence is purely precautionary, it will leave Spurs fans sweating on the fitness of their star man.

Potential recovery time

Minor calf strains tend to recover within a few days, but may not feel back to top condition for up to six weeks, according to Oxford University Hospitals. Son has been incredibly influential already for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this season, netting twice in the opening three games as he helped the Lilywhites to top of the table as things stand.

However, with a theoretically simple trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace this weekend preceding a mammoth clash with title hopefuls Chelsea, the decision may be taken to leave Son out of the game against the South Londoners, and focus on getting him sharp for the tie with Tuchel’s men.

Spurs, of course, will already be without key trio Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Giovanni Lo Celso due to Covid regulations, making the trip to Crystal Palace a potential early pitfall for the north Londoners.
