Tqriq Lamptey ‘unlikely’ to be fit for Brighton’s season opener

FPL bosses take note: Tariq Lamptey’s status for season opener called into question

Brighton & Hove Albion star Tariq Lamptey may not be fit enough to take part in the club’s opening game of the season, it has been confirmed.

Seagulls standout

Right-back Lamptey of course established himself as one of Brighton’s star performers over the early months of last season.

Combining a lethal combination of pace, touch, guile and pinpoint final ball, the ex-Chelsea talent lit up the Amex’s right flank, on his way to a goal and assist across 11 Premier League appearances.

Such form even saw the 20-year-old named as a target for some of English football’s biggest clubs, with Arsenal, at one point, understood to have been particularly keen.

In turn, it came as a blow for not only those at Brighton, but also Lamptey’s many admirers, when, first, back in December, the defender was struck down by a hamstring problem.

After a full three months on the sidelines, though, Lamptey’s situation had not improved, ultimately forcing the youngster under the knife, and bringing a premature end to his campaign.

‘Need to make sure…’

Hope had since been widespread that Lamptey would ultimately return to the pitch in Brighton’s 2021/22 season opener, a Premier League trip to Turf Moor in three weeks’ time.

But, as outlined above, if the latest word doing the rounds this weekend is anything to go by, then such a development is beginning to look increasingly unlikely.

Speaking in an interview with The Athletic this evening, Graham Potter was drawn on the latest on Lamptey’s fitness.

And the Seagulls boss went on to confirm that the 20-year-old is not improving ‘as fast as we would like’:

‘It is a little bit slower than we would like and probably he would like but with the nature of his surgery and the injury, we need to make sure that he is right rather than putting any timescale on it.’

‘He is making progress but not as fast as we and he would like.’

When pressed on the possibility of Lamptey featuring on opening day versus Burnley, Potter continued:

‘It is important that we just stay patient and do the right things for him, make sure we finish off this last stage of his rehab in a good way, because it is not necessarily about being available for the first game, it is about being available for as many games as he can in the season.’
