“Arsenal win this game with a different VAR” Arsenal offsides explained

Arteta’s VAR frustrations

The frustrations of Arsenal’s season came to a head not only in the form of protests before the game against Everton but in the post-match press conference when Mikel Arteta condemned the VAR system saying he had ‘had enough.’

“Well, this is because it is building up and enough is enough, and today, to be fair, I had enough,” said Arteta.

“We have had many of them, and no one explains. When they explain, they say, ‘sorry, it was a mistake’ but unfortunately it is affecting a lot of people, and it is affecting our job and most importantly our football club.”

The two key decisions which went against Arsenal were for a penalty call on Ceballos where Pepe was adjudged to have been marginally offside in the build up. Then the second where Richarlison was deemed a hairsbreadth onside in the lead up to Leno’s howler.

A different VAR, a different result?

ESPN’s Dale Johnson has been the man on social media to cover all the ongoing  controversy regarding VAR this season.

Johnson believes that had a different VAR official been in place they may have come up with a different result.

Arguably the system should not be used if the correct result cannot be guaranteed. Until software is available to do so, the outcome is frustration and anger towards the officials which are limited by their own chance of error.

A semi-automatic system is being developed and will hopefully come into play soon.

However, for Arsenal and their season, the result has left the pressure all on Arteta and the Europa League.
