Last month, Disney tugged at our heartstrings when it released a 30-second trailer of the upcoming Lion King live-action film featuring a snippet of Beyoncé and Donald Glover’s romantic duet “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Today, the soundtrack arrived with the full version of the duet to give us all the feels.
Billy Eichner, who plays Timon, and Seth Rogen, who voices Pumba, kick things off with a mini skit about Simba falling in love with Nala. Then, Beyoncé and Glover enter with warm voices that feel as soft as floating over a plush cloud. Beyoncé’s hushed voice swells into a vibrato-rich tone while Glover keeps it cool, calm, and collected before Eichner and Rogen return to finish it up.
Glover opened up about working on the song with Beyoncé on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and revealed that they didn’t actually record the song together in the same room. “No, I requested not to be. I did not want to be looking into Beyonce’s eyes while doing this,” he said. “But no, actually, I was working on Solo [A Star Wars Story] at the time, so I was in London, so I recorded at Abbey Road Studios.”
Kimmel said that’s a less intimidating way to record and Glover agreed, adding, “I imagine it’s less intimidating playing basketball with Michael Jordan if you’re at home just throwing pieces of paper in the trash.”
The Lion King soundtrack features remakes of the film’s classic songs like “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” and a new original song from Beyoncé titled “Spirit.”
The Lion King hits theaters on July 19.
