First Teamfight Tactics tournament to be hosted by Twitch

Riot Games and Twitch have teamed up to launch the first Teamfight Tactics (TFT) tournament through Twitch Rivals.

The event, which takes place on July 17–18, will see 64 Twitch streamers battle it out over two days for a share of the $125,000 (£100,000).

The first day of the tournament will see players split into two groups of 32, with each group starting at different time slots. The following and final day will feature the top eight from each group as they compete for their share of the prize purse.

A full list of streamers taking part in the event is due to be published on July 8th, alongside a full breakdown of its format. Based on previous Twitch Rivals events, we will likely see a number of different methods in which competitors can earn points — winning rounds, reaching the furthest round, having the most 3 star champions, and so on.

Teamfight Tactics, commonly referred to as TFT, is Riot Games’ take on the popular – and relatively recent – craze of ‘Autobattler’ games. Originally starting out as a mod for Dota 2, the genre has quickly seen a mobile port, a standalone game releasing on the Epic Store later this year, and an official Valve release called Dota Underlords. Valve’s title also unveiled its first official esports event just last week. The event will take place at this year’s ESL One Hamburg.

As for TFT: You’ll be able to queue up solo or with up to seven others and battle with your selection of popular League of Legends heroes. With items, champion synergies and PVE rounds, TFT is hard to grasp at first but is probably the easiest to learn of the current crop of Autobattler titles. TFT is currently in open beta and can be played by anyone on PC via the League of Legends client.

Esports Insider says: Riot Games recently said that it would put the ‘S’ in Riot Games, and with TFT it has gone some way to doing that. This tournament, however, is more proof of how quickly game companies, especially those already in esports, will try to capitalise on a trend. Only time will tell if TFT breaks away from LoL and becomes its own beast, or if it just becomes another LoL game mode like URF or ARAM.
